Modern ultra-long-range aircraft exploit polar and sub-polar great-circle routes to shave two to three hours off New York–Seoul, Chicago–Beijing, and similar city pairs. The route requires ETOPS-equivalent polar certification and careful contingency planning for diversion airports.
