The Airline Transport Pilot License — known as the ATPL in ICAO terminology and the Airline Transport Pilot Certificate under FAA regulations — is the highest level of pilot certification available for fixed-wing aircraft. Holding an ATPL is a prerequisite for serving as pilot-in-command, or captain, of a commercial airliner certified for multi-crew operations. It represents the culmination of years of training, thousands of hours of accumulated flight experience, and a comprehensive examination of aeronautical knowledge.
What Is the Airline Transport Pilot License?
ICAO Annex 1 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation defines the ATPL as the certificate required to act as pilot-in-command of an aircraft in commercial air transport operations. In practice, "commercial air transport" means any flight for hire or reward — every scheduled airline departure in the world falls under this category. The ATPL is the capstone of a progression that typically begins with a Private Pilot License (PPL), advances through a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with instrument rating, and culminates in the full ATPL after minimum flight experience thresholds are met.
In the United States the equivalent is the Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP), issued under 14 CFR Part 61. Candidates must be at least 23 years old, hold a first-class medical certificate, accumulate 1,500 hours of total flight time (with specific sub-requirements for cross-country, night, and instrument time), and pass the ATP written knowledge test as well as a rigorous practical exam (checkride) conducted by an FAA-designated examiner or in an FAA-approved flight training device. Graduates of specific four-year aviation university programs and military pilots may qualify with reduced minimums of 1,000 and 750 hours respectively under the Restricted ATP (R-ATP) pathway.
In Europe, EASA regulations define the ATPL(A) for aeroplanes and ATPL(H) for helicopters. The EASA ATPL(A) requires 1,500 hours total time, completion of approved theoretical knowledge courses covering 14 subjects (air law, meteorology, human performance, navigation, aircraft general knowledge, and more), and demonstrated proficiency in an approved flight simulator or aircraft.
How It Works in Practice
Airlines do not require a full ATPL to hire a pilot as first officer. In many jurisdictions, including the United States, a first officer needs only a commercial license with instrument rating — though the FAA's post-Colgan Air reforms require all Part 121 first officers to hold an ATP. Many pilots enter the right seat of a regional jet with an ATP certificate and then accumulate seniority and hours toward upgrading to the left seat (captain) at their carrier or a major airline.
The type-specific endorsement component of the ATPL is handled separately through type ratings. Passing the ATPL exam qualifies a pilot to hold the license in principle; actually flying a 737 or A320 as captain also requires a type rating for that specific aircraft, obtained through an approved training course and simulator evaluation.

Candidates study aircraft general knowledge in detail sufficient to understand why systems behave as they do during abnormal situations, not merely which procedure to execute. Meteorology at the ATPL level covers atmospheric dynamics, turbulence formation, icing, and thunderstorm avoidance in a manner directly applicable to real-world flight planning decisions. Human performance and limitations — covering fatigue, decision-making under stress, spatial disorientation, and crew coordination — has been embedded in ATPL syllabuses since the implementation of ICAO's updated Annex 1 standards in the 1990s. These subjects collectively produce pilots who are not merely skilled controllers of an aircraft but competent managers of the entire flight environment.
