Definition
Privilege of boarding the aircraft before standard economy passengers, sold as an add-on or earned through status
Priority boarding is the privilege of joining an earlier boarding group than standard economy passengers, allowing holders to board the aircraft before the main cabin rush and access overhead bins, organize their space, and settle in without pressure. It is sold, earned, or awarded to a broad range of travelers — from business class ticket holders and elite frequent flyers to passengers who paid a modest ancillary fee.
What Is Priority Boarding?
Priority boarding grants access to a designated wave — typically among the first two or three groups called — before general economy boarding begins. It is distinct from pre-boarding, which is reserved for passengers needing special assistance, unaccompanied minors, and families with young children. Priority boarding encompasses first class and business class travelers by default, as their cabin is boarded first, but it is also extended to elite loyalty program members, holders of co-branded airline credit cards, military personnel on certain carriers, and passengers who purchase it as an add-on. The specific boarding wave assigned to priority holders varies by airline and status level: a United Airlines 1K member boards in Group 1, while a basic Mileage Plus Silver boards in Group 2.
How It Works in Practice
Airlines integrate priority boarding into their boarding pass system so gate scanners automatically read the passenger's assigned group. When the gate agent calls "Priority" or "Group 1," the scanner accepts cards assigned to that group and rejects those assigned to later groups. On busy hubs like Chicago O'Hare or London Heathrow, gate agents may visually check boarding passes for passengers attempting to board early. Some carriers — most notably Ryanair — sell priority boarding as an ancillary product for €6–€15 per segment, allowing any passenger to move to the front of the boarding queue regardless of their seat assignment. Delta SkyMiles Platinum credit cardholders receive Main Cabin 1 boarding (third group) as a card benefit, representing a common approach to using priority boarding as a loyalty driver.
Why It Matters
Priority boarding has real practical value. On nearly full flights — which now constitute the majority of departures at major US carriers, where load factors routinely exceed 85 percent — overhead bin space above one's assigned seat is often exhausted before the final boarding groups are called. Passengers in late groups frequently have to stow bags several rows behind their seats or gate-check bags at no additional cost. Priority boarding eliminates this uncertainty. For airlines, priority boarding is an increasingly significant revenue line: ancillary fee reports from low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier show priority boarding generating tens of millions of dollars annually when bundled with other add-ons.
Key Facts and Figures
- American, United, and Delta all offer priority boarding as a standalone purchase or as part of fare bundles ranging from $9 to $30 per segment.
- Co-branded airline credit cards from Chase (United), Citi (American), and American Express (Delta) provide priority boarding as a primary card benefit.
- Ryanair reported ancillary revenue of over €3 billion in fiscal year 2024, with priority boarding among the top contributing products.
- Military personnel in uniform board before general boarding on American Airlines, Delta, United, and Southwest without charge.
- Priority boarding does not guarantee overhead bin space; it only improves the probability of finding space near one's seat.
- IATA does not standardize priority boarding definitions; each airline defines its own tier structure.
