A History of In-Flight Entertainment: From Projected Films to Streaming Altitude

In-flight entertainment evolved from cumbersome 16mm film projectors to personal seatback screens and wireless streaming. Trace the technology that transformed long-haul flying.

Few aspects of the passenger experience have transformed more completely than in-flight entertainment. The traveler who flew transatlantic in 1960 sat in relative silence with a paperback or a drink; the traveler in 2010 could choose from hundreds of films, television series, and music albums on a personal seatback screen. By 2025, streaming from personal devices over cabin Wi-Fi had begun displacing the seatback screen entirely on some carriers. The 65-year arc from analog to connected is a story of competing technological visions and the economics of heavy iron.

The First Films Aloft: 1960s

In-flight entertainment began in 1961 when TWA became the first airline to screen a feature film aboard a commercial flight. The movie was By Love Possessed, starring Lana Turner, shown on a New York–Los Angeles route using a 16mm projector mounted to the cabin ceiling. Passengers wore headsets with a single audio channel, and the screen was small enough that passengers in window seats struggled to see it.

The economics of early IFE were brutal. Each film reel had to be loaded and operated by crew members with no other duties. The projector required a dedicated mounting, maintenance expertise, and replacement film on every route. Audio was distributed through simple pneumatic headsets — plastic tubes that carried sound waves rather than electrical signals, with no amplification, resulting in tinny, indistinct audio. Early IFE was a luxury curiosity rather than a passenger expectation.

The Video Era: 1970s–1980s

The introduction of videotape in the 1970s transformed in-flight entertainment's economics. Videocassette systems eliminated the heavy, fragile film reels and the manual projection setup, replacing them with centralized videotape players that fed content to overhead monitors distributed throughout the cabin. This was the era of the 'drop-down screen' — monitors that folded into the ceiling and descended at the start of a film program.

The Boeing 747's main deck length — over 57 meters — created real challenges for distributed overhead monitor systems. Screens were positioned every few rows, but passengers far from any screen had a degraded viewing experience. Audio improved with the replacement of pneumatic headsets by wired electrical headsets, but the single-channel experience remained. Every passenger on the flight watched the same film at the same time.

Personal Screens and On-Demand: 1990s–2000s

The pivotal shift in IFE came with the development of Audio/Video On Demand (AVOD) systems. Singapore Airlines is widely credited with pioneering the commercial rollout of seat-back personal screens with on-demand content, launching the KrisWorld system on long-haul routes in the early 1990s. The concept was radical: passengers could choose what to watch, when to start, and could pause, rewind, or fast-forward on individual screens embedded in the seat back ahead.

The technical complexity of early AVOD was immense. Content had to be digitized, stored on servers embedded in the aircraft, and distributed through a network of cabling that ran through the aircraft structure. A single wide-body aircraft might require kilometers of additional wiring to support seatback IFE, adding hundreds of kilograms of weight and significantly increasing fuel burn.

Weight was the central tradeoff. The IFE hardware required for a fully equipped wide-body — servers, screens, cabling, seat-integrated controllers — could weigh upward of 3,000 kilograms. At typical fuel burn rates for a long-haul aircraft, that translates to meaningful incremental operating cost per flight. Carriers weighed passenger satisfaction and premium seat differentiation against that ongoing fuel penalty when deciding whether to equip aircraft with full AVOD.

The Content Library Arms Race

Once on-demand IFE became standard on premium long-haul aircraft, competition shifted to content. Carriers began negotiating directly with film studios for early-window rights — access to films closer to theatrical release rather than the traditional 6-to-12-month delay before the in-flight window opened. Emirates pioneered a marketing campaign around its ice (Information, Communication, Entertainment) system, advertising thousands of content options as a competitive differentiator.

Content localization became critical as carriers expanded into new markets. A long-haul flight from Dubai to Beijing needed Mandarin-language content, subtitles, and locally relevant programming to serve a predominantly Chinese cabin. Managing content in 30 or more languages, curated by route and passenger demographic, required dedicated in-flight entertainment teams and sophisticated content management systems.

Wi-Fi and the Streaming Challenge

The introduction of in-flight Wi-Fi systems in the 2000s and 2010s opened a fundamentally different model: rather than storing content on the aircraft, stream it live or from an on-board server to passengers' personal devices. Early in-flight Wi-Fi, delivered via satellite systems like ViaSat and Gogo's air-to-ground network, was too slow and expensive for reliable video streaming. By the mid-2010s, satellite bandwidth had improved enough for basic streaming, and carriers began trialing personal-device-based IFE systems.

The appeal for airlines was obvious: eliminating seatback screens removed thousands of pounds of hardware, reduced maintenance costs dramatically, and sidestepped the complex certification process that each new IFE hardware generation requires. The risk was equally obvious: passenger-owned devices vary in screen quality, battery life, and capability; passengers may forget their devices; and the experience is less controlled than a purpose-built in-seat system.

The current industry trajectory is a hybrid. Full-service long-haul carriers continue to invest in seatback screens as premium differentiators, particularly in business and first class. Low-cost and short-haul carriers are increasingly offering Wi-Fi-only IFE or relying entirely on passenger devices. The seatback screen's dominance is not guaranteed — it is the product of economics, not nostalgia.
