South African Airways

South African Airways, commonly known as SAA, was founded in 1934 and is the flag carrier of South Africa. Headquartered in Johannesburg, the airline operates its primary hub at O.R. Tambo International Airport. SAA is a member of the Star Alliance. The airline's fleet has varied over the years but has included Airbus A340-300 and Airbus A330-300 aircraft for long-haul routes, along with Airbus A320 family aircraft for domestic and regional services. SAA's cabin products include Business Class with lie-flat seats on long-haul routes and Economy Class. The airline has historically served as the primary link between South Africa and the rest of the world, with routes spanning Africa, Europe, North America, Asia, and Australasia. The Voyager frequent flyer program offers earning and redemption across Star Alliance partners. South African Airways has faced significant financial challenges over the past two decades, entering business rescue proceedings in 2019 and undergoing a comprehensive restructuring. The airline relaunched operations in 2021 under new management with a significantly reduced fleet and route network. The Takatso Consortium was initially selected as a strategic equity partner to recapitalize the airline. SAA played a historically significant role during the apartheid era, when it was one of the few airlines maintaining international service under sanctions. The airline's recovery and recapitalization efforts continue as it works to rebuild its network and fleet from its Johannesburg hub.
