Japan Airlines, commonly known as JAL, was founded in 1951 and is headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo. As one of Japan's two major carriers and a member of the oneworld alliance, JAL operates its primary hubs at Tokyo Narita International Airport and Tokyo Haneda Airport, with secondary hubs at Osaka Kansai and Osaka Itami airports. The airline serves over 90 destinations domestically and internationally, with particular strength on transpacific routes to North America, routes to Europe, and an extensive domestic network connecting Japan's major cities and islands. JAL's fleet includes Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliner, Boeing 777-300ER, and Airbus A350-900 and A350-1000 aircraft, with the airline progressively retiring older Boeing 777 variants. The airline's premium products include First Class with enclosed suites on select international routes, Business Class with the Sky Suite III lie-flat seats featuring doors for privacy, Premium Economy, and Economy Class. JAL's in-flight service emphasizes Japanese hospitality, or omotenashi, with meticulously prepared Japanese and Western cuisine. The JAL Mileage Bank frequent flyer program offers elite status tiers and redemption options across oneworld partners. JAL underwent a significant restructuring after filing for bankruptcy in 2010, emerging as a leaner and more profitable carrier in 2011. The airline subsequently launched ZIPAIR Tokyo, a low-cost long-haul subsidiary operating Boeing 787 Dreamliners to destinations in Asia, Hawaii, and the US West Coast.
