Definition
World's largest airline alliance with 26 member airlines founded in 1997
Star Alliance is the world's largest global airline alliance by number of member carriers and total annual passenger traffic, founded in 1997 by five airlines and since grown to 26 full members spanning every inhabited continent.
What Is Star Alliance?
Star Alliance was established on 14 May 1997 by Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Thai Airways, and United Airlines. Its founding premise was that a coordinated network of complementary carriers could offer passengers seamless global connectivity superior to what any single airline could provide alone. Today the alliance covers more than 1,200 airports in 195 countries, making it the broadest physical footprint of any alliance.
Membership as of recent years includes United Airlines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, ANA (All Nippon Airways), Turkish Airlines, South African Airways, Air China, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Thai Airways, Copa Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Egypt Air, Ethiopian Airlines, EVA Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, and several others.
How It Works in Practice
Star Alliance's governance body is headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, and sets common service standards that all members are required to meet. These standards cover lounge quality benchmarks, check-in experience minimums, baggage connectivity requirements, and interline ticketing protocols. Passengers holding Star Alliance Gold status — earned through elite tiers on any member airline such as United Premier 1K or Lufthansa Senator — receive priority check-in, lounge access, and priority boarding across all member airlines.
The alliance operates a centralized IT platform that facilitates passenger data sharing, enabling a member airline's system to recognize a passenger's tier earned on a different member. United and Lufthansa, for example, have a deep joint venture layered on top of the alliance baseline that goes further in sharing revenues on transatlantic routes.
Why It Matters
Star Alliance's size creates a self-reinforcing network effect. A Singapore Airlines Krisflyer member can earn miles flying ANA domestically in Japan, or redeem them for a Lufthansa First Class flight to Europe. This breadth makes Star Alliance particularly attractive for frequent international travelers. For airlines, membership unlocks coordinated scheduling at congested hub airports — Frankfurt, Heathrow, Tokyo Haneda — reducing the risk of misconnections and increasing yield on premium cabin seats.
