SkyTeam
Definition
Airline alliance with 19 members including Delta, Air France-KLM, and Korean Air
SkyTeam is a global airline alliance founded in 2000 and anchored by Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM, and Korean Air, distinguished by its strength in French and Korean hub markets and a growing presence across Africa and Latin America.
What Is SkyTeam?
SkyTeam was established on 22 June 2000 with four founding members: Delta Air Lines, Air France, Aeromexico, and Korean Air. It was the last of the three major alliances to form, positioning itself as the alternative to Star Alliance's scale and oneworld's premium focus. The alliance subsequently expanded to include KLM (which merged with Air France), Kenya Airways, China Southern Airlines (which later departed), Saudia, Vietnam Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Czech Airlines, Tarom, Middle East Airlines, and several others. Alliance headquarters is in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
SkyTeam's geographic strengths lie in France (Charles de Gaulle is a major alliance hub), South Korea (Incheon is a key Asia-Pacific transfer point through Korean Air), and the Netherlands (Amsterdam Schiphol through KLM). The alliance has made a deliberate effort to build African coverage, with Kenya Airways providing connectivity into sub-Saharan Africa.
How It Works in Practice
SkyTeam's elite tier structure — Elite and Elite Plus — provides lounge access and priority services across member airlines. A Delta SkyMiles Diamond Medallion member flying Korean Air or Air France-KLM receives SkyTeam Elite Plus treatment, including priority check-in, boarding, and lounge access. Air France-KLM's Flying Blue program spans both carriers and serves as one of the alliance's most widely used loyalty currencies.
SkyTeam operates SkyTeam Cargo as a freight cooperation arm, enabling coordinated cargo capacity across member networks — a feature that gives it a distinct dimension compared to pure passenger alliances. Delta and Air France-KLM hold antitrust immunity for their joint venture on the North Atlantic, enabling deep revenue pooling beyond standard alliance cooperation.
Why It Matters
SkyTeam's hub structure at Paris CDG gives European passengers particularly strong intra-European and long-haul connectivity through one of Europe's highest-capacity airports. Korean Air's position at Incheon — a premier Sixth Freedom hub — means SkyTeam offers competitive connections between North America and Southeast Asia. The alliance's broad cargo cooperation also makes it relevant to airlines whose revenue mix includes significant freight.
