Norwegian Air Shuttle, commonly known as Norwegian, was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Fornebu near Oslo, Norway. The airline operates as a low-cost carrier with its primary base at Oslo Gardermoen Airport and additional bases across Scandinavia and other European cities. Norwegian's fleet consists primarily of Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The airline pioneered low-cost long-haul transatlantic service in the 2010s using Boeing 787 Dreamliners, offering affordable fares between Europe and the United States that disrupted the traditional pricing structure of the transatlantic market. However, the long-haul operation was discontinued during the COVID-19 pandemic restructuring, as it required scale and market conditions that proved unsustainable. Norwegian emerged from restructuring in 2021 as a purely short and medium-haul carrier focused on Scandinavia and European leisure routes. The airline offers three fare classes: LowFare, LowFare+, and Flex, with ancillary revenue from baggage fees, seat selection, and in-flight purchases. Norwegian Reward is the airline's loyalty program, offering CashPoints that can be used toward future bookings. Norwegian does not participate in any global airline alliance. The airline's distinctive livery features portraits of Scandinavian heroes and cultural figures on its aircraft tail fins. Norwegian has been recognized as the best low-cost carrier in Europe by Skytrax on multiple occasions and continues to hold a dominant position in the Nordic travel market.
